Joseph Hyland has been named West Catholic High School's new head football coach.

In a news release issued Monday, May 9, Hyland's background includes coaching high school athletes and those at the collegiate level. He carries a master's degree in counseling from Illinois' Franciscan University, a bachelor's in history from Illinois' Millikin University and seminary studies in theology and philosophy at Maryland's Mount St. Mary's Seminary.

Hyland helped start a football program from the ground up at St. Joseph's High School and since 2011, he has been a finalist for South Carolina's Coach of the Year award, according to the news release. He helped to bring the team to the playoffs in each of his final four seasons.

Hyland is married to wife Andrea Hyland, and they have seven children.

"I am excited to be part of the long tradition of excellence that is West Catholic football," Hyland said in the release. "I would like to thank Coach Rohn and all the past coaches and players that have built the foundation on which I stand today. I would also like to thank all the assistant coaches.

"I’m excited to learn from them and work together to train these young men to be winners not only in football but in life."
