WEXFORD COUNTY, Mich. — You're urged to stay out of Lake Cadillac at Kenwood Park this weekend. Otherwise, you run the risk of getting sick.

That's due to recent water samples that showed elevated E. coli levels, the District Health Department #10 said Friday.

Wexford County regularly conducts water sampling and reported the higher-than-normal levels on Friday at Kenwood Park.

When swimming or having other contact with the water, your risk of getting sick due to contamination increases.

Health officials said children, the elderly and folks with compromised immune systems are at a higher risk.

Exposure to contaminated water could lead to flu-like symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramping, fever and dehydration.

Upper respiratory illnesses could also occur. If you have an open wound, skin infections could happen if it's not properly protected.

Wexford County is continuing to test the water and will report back to the health department when available.

In the meantime, health officials urge you to avoid water contact until the samples show the E. coli levels have reduced.
