GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Calvin University announced the grand opening of a new soccer stadium on Friday.

The 855-seat stadium has covered seating and is fully lit. It's designed as a standalone soccer facility but will also be used for lacrosse.

44% of the seats in the stadium have backs. It was designed with fully ramped walkways and designated handicapped seating for ADA access.

The stadium also has plaza spaces to expand its capacity.

"This stadium is a game-changer for our program," said Ryan Souders, men's head soccer coach. "It reflects the high standards both soccer programs have set on the field and provides our players and fans with a world-class environment. We're excited to take this next step and continue building on our legacy of excellence in Division III soccer."

For the players, there are men's and women's locker rooms in the stadium with team gathering spaces, lounge areas and video screens.

"Our players are thrilled to have a facility that matches their hard work and ambition. This is a space where we can continue to grow and elevate women's soccer at Calvin to new heights," said Emily Ottenhoff, women's head soccer coach.

The fans were long from forgotten. There are fully equipped concessions and restrooms.

There's also a 32-foot by 20-foot video board that can be used for live event broadcasting. The university said it could be used for movies, music concerts and outdoor worship services.

The stadium has a press box that was made to handle game management, broadcasts and live streams.

Working towards sustainability and carbon neutrality, the stadium is powered by a fully electric geothermal heating and cooling system.

"With its incredible features and sustainable design, this stadium truly sets Calvin University apart," said Jim Timmer, director of athletics. "We now have a home worthy of our national-caliber soccer programs, consistently ranked among the best in NCAA Division III. This venue also supports our mission to care for our environment through energy-efficient design."
