GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Several Grand Rapids Griffins fans were removed from the arena for throwing foam pucks onto the ice during a game.

The fans were ejected during the Friday night game against Cleveland at Van Andel Arena in downtown Grand Rapids.

According to a post the Griffins made on their Facebook page, the team had just scored their game-tying goal to force it into overtime when fans threw their foam pucks onto the ice.

This resulted in a delay-of-game penalty against the Griffins. Cleveland scored on the following power play in overtime, leaving the Griffins without a second point in their standings and costing them their three-game winning streak on home ice.

Of the nine fans, several of them were immediately removed and according to the Griffins' post, the "owner" of each puck has been identified and will be addressed.

The pucks were purchased as part of the Griffins' long-time Throw for Dough charitable fundraiser. According to the statement, they're looking into other options for changing the promotion so it doesn't happen again.
