NEWAYGO, Mich — While the Newaygo High School boys basketball team did not end with a CSAA Tournament championship this season, the Lions closed the tourney with two solid wins over Chippewa Hills and Central Montcalm.
It was already tourney time for Newaygo. However, the fun really begins now as districts start on Monday for the Lions.
Newaygo is 14-8 on the year. Five of the six seniors on the team have played all four years, and have set the foundation for what the Lions hope to become someday.
"I sound like an old coach but we've got to get better defensively and we need to box out better and limit second-chance points," Newaygo head coach Jason Long said. "It really does come down to that end of the court. We have to get stops and know that we can count on each other to get stops every time down."
Right now, however, they are focusing on the little things ahead of the postseason.
"We definitely need to start out hotter," Newaygo senior Josiah Long said. "Come out ready to play right away and box out and limit the second chance points. As soon as we do that, we will be able to jump on teams and finish the game quicker."
The Lions will face Tri-County in the first round of the postseason on Monday at Fremont High School.
