INDIANAPOLIS — How does Tennessee celebrate a history making season? By making more history of course.
“Just us winning the SEC that's cool but now we got a couple more games to win so we can get a national championship,” said freshman guard Zakai Zeigler
Lofty goals for a team that’s never made it past the elite eight. Then again, the 27 and 7 Vols hadn’t won an SEC tournament in 43 years but that got that done earlier this week.
"I think we're playing really good basketball right now,” said junior guard Josiah-Jordan James. “I think we have a lot of areas that we can get better in. That's the exciting part about it.”
Not sure how much better on defense though. Under the leadership of head coach Rick Barnes, they were the best in the SEC in that category, wreaking havoc in the passing lanes with nine steals a game.
“That's what we pride ourselves on,” said Zeigler. “We know coming into the game if you can be tougher than the other team, trying to run them out of their offense that's the best thing you can really do.”
It should be a big challenge for the Wolverines. Tipoff for this second-round showdown between Michigan and Tennessee is Saturday evening at 5:15. In Indianapolis.
