SUPER BOWL FAVORITES | Detroit Lions in uncharted territory after being favored to win the big game

This is uncharted territory for the Lions as they are now being called the best team in the NFL and the favorites to win Super Bowl LIX.

DETROIT — After the only undefeated team left in the NFL fell on Sunday, the Detroit Lions are now widely considered to be the best team as well as being favored to win Super Bowl LIX.

This is uncharted territory for the Lions in the Super Bowl era, having only ever made it to the conference finals and never being favored to win the Super Bowl in franchise history.

With the loss of the Kansas City Chiefs to the Buffalo Bills Sunday, the Lions are now the favorites to win Super Bowl LIX across all major sports books in Las Vegas, according to VegasInsider.com.

The Lions season this year has been historic on many levels, including the team racking up the most points scored and touchdowns scored in the first 10 games in franchise history.

The team also has its best start since 1934, where the Lions started 10-1 to finish their season at 10-3.

The Lions dominance over teams hasn't gone unnoticed with them being only the third team in the Super Bowl era with three 35-plus wins over opponents in the first 10 games of the season.

At a postgame press conference following the Lions 52-6 win over the Jaguars last week, head coach Dan Campbell showed his confidence in the team with a response to a question about whether the Lions offense was one of the best all-time.

"I think we have that ability," Campbell said. "I really do. I think we have the ability. To me, we have everything that we need to be potent."

ESPN ranks the Lions offense as one of the best in the league:

  • Total yards per game - 3rd
  • Passing yards per game - 6th
  • Rushing yards per game - 3rd
  • Total points per game - 1st

The Lions defense is no slouch either, earning high rankings in points against per game (5th), rush defense (5th) and total yards against (12th).

The Lions are on pace to clinch home field advantage through the playoffs but still need to compete with their division rivals, the Minnesota Vikings (8-2) and Green Bay Packers (7-3), as well as the Philadelphia Eagles (8-2).

Detroit is heading to Indianapolis on Sunday to take on the Colts at 1 p.m.
