Lions quarterback retires to coach high school football at alma mater

Teddy Bridgewater played in the NFL for 10 years and was most recently the backup quarterback for the Detroit Lions.

DETROIT — A backup quarterback for the Detroit Lions is hanging up his helmet and pads in exchange for a clipboard and a whistle.

Teddy Bridgewater is heading back to his alma mater in Southern Florida to coach high school football at Miami Northwestern, Yahoo Sports reports.

Bridgewater played three seasons at the University of Louisville before being selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round of the NFL Draft in 2014.

After playing for several NFL teams throughout his career, Bridgewater was signed by the Lions just two weeks before the 2023 NFL preseason started.

While Bridgewater only played in one game during the regular season, he played in two preseason games, throwing for over 200 yards and a touchdown.

Bridgewater, affectionately nicknamed "Teddy Two Gloves," had a reputation for being a positive influence on his teammates in the locker room.

The quarterback also had ties to Lions coach Dan Campbell, who was the assistant coach during Bridgewater's tenure with the New Orleans Saints.

Bridgewater played for the Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins before coming to Detroit. The veteran quarterback played for 10 seasons in the NFL.
