DETROIT — The Detroit Lions won their first playoff game since 1992 last night when they defeated QB Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams 24-23.
It was a matchup of former QBs as Jared Goff faced his former team and Stafford returned to Detroit to try to end their playoff win dreams.
The hard-fought game went down to the final minutes when the Lions were able to hold on to a single-point lead in the fourth quarter.
Both QBs played at a high level, with high completion percentages and no turnovers, but only one QB was able to take home the victory.
Here are the key plays that resulted in points for the Lions in their Sunday night matchup against the Rams:
1st Quarter (9:30) - David Montgomery 1-yard TD run
The Lions opened up the game against the Rams with a 75-yard drive ending with a 1-yard run from David Montgomery to put the Lions up 7-0.
1st Quarter (1:31) - Jahmyr Gibbs 10-yard TD run
After the Rams drove down the field and scored a field goal, the Lions answered back in their second drive of the game with a touchdown.
Over five plays, the Lions drove 75 yards, culminating in a touchdown off a 10-yard run by Jahmyr Gibbs to put the Lions up 14-3.
2nd Quarter (7:12) - Sam LaPorta 2-yard TD pass from Jared Goff
About halfway through the 2nd quarter, the Lions were back on the goal line after marching 73 yards down the field over 11 plays.
Jared Goff hit Sam LaPorta near the back of the endzone for a 2-yard touchdown pass, extending the Lions lead to 21-10.
3rd Quarter (8:41) - Michael Badgley 54-yard field goal
The first Lions' possession of the second half would lead to a field goal which would end up being the deciding factor in the matchup.
Lions drive 44 yards over eight plays and set up at the Rams' 36-yard-line for a 54-yard field goal attempt. Michael Badgley, who is under 50% from that range, drills the field goal and gives the Lions a 24-17 lead over the Rams.
4th Quarter (1:53) - Amon-Ra St. Brown 11-yard 1st Down pass from Jared Goff
And while it wasn't a scoring play, Jared Goff's 11-yard completion to Amon-Ra St. Brown would give the Lions the first down they needed to close out the game.
After the catch, Goff would take a knee three times to close out the first playoff victory for the Lions in 32 years. Lions beat the Rams 24-23 in a thriller that will be remembered in Detroit for generations to come.
Lions are set to play the winner of Philadelphia and Tampa Bay, who play tonight at 8:15 p.m. in Tampa Bay. The Lions will host the next playoff game in Detroit next Sunday at 3 p.m.
