Michigan native headed to Paris Olympics as part of U.S. women's field hockey team

WHITMORE LAKE, Mich. — A Michigan native is on her way to Paris with the U.S. women's field hockey team. 

Abby Tamer, 20, grew up in Whitmore Lake and graduated from Dexter High School. She's currently attending the University of Michigan studying applied exercise science and is set to graduate in 2025. 

The team of 16 athletes has a mix of Olympic veterans and newcomers, as they're returning to the Olympics for the first time since Rio 2016. Tamer will be playing as a forward/midfielder. 

Tamer began playing field hockey when she was in seventh grade and her mom ran a successful field hockey program in her hometown. 

Some of Tamer's career highlights include:

  • 2023: Named to the U.S. Women's National Team (January)
  • 2023: Named to the U.S. Women's National Team (June)
  • 2023: Named to the U.S. U-21 Women's National Team (January)
  • 2022: Named to the U.S. U-21 Women's National Team, Argentina Tour (Senior USWNT)
  • 2022: Named to Big Ten Players to Watch List, Big Ten Champion, NFHCA All-West Region Second Team, NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad
    • All at the University of Michigan
  • 2021:Big Ten Champion, NFHCA All-Academic Team, Scholar of Distinction
    • All at the University of Michigan
  • 2020: Named to the U.S. Rise Women's National Team, Test Series against Canada (Chula Vista, Calif.)
  • 2019: Named to the U.S. U-16 Women's National Team, Germany Tour

Tamer is also familiar with playing in world championships. 

In 2023, she attended the Junior Pan American Championship in St. Michael, Barbados. 

Her team received a bronze medal at the 2022 Uniphar 5-Nations Tournament in Dublin, Ireland. 

In 2021, her team received a bronze medal at the Junior Pan American Championship in Santiago, Chile. Also in 2021, her team placed eighth in the Junior World Cup in Potchefstroom, South Africa. 

In Paris, the U.S. women's field hockey team is in Pool B. Their first game is against Argentina on Saturday, July 27 at 1:45 p.m. EST.
