GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — With the 2024 spring migration underway, it was a great weekend for the Bird Bonanza.
Hikers and birders alike gathered at Blandford Nature Center Saturday morning and into the early afternoon to scout out birds and enjoy the outdoors.
Those who took part Saturday were able to learn about some of Blanford's wildlife ambassador birds and even learn about wildlife photography from the award-winning photographer Steve Jessmore.
"So far, we've got some really good, rare, interesting birds, like black-billed cuckoos and Bay-breasted warblers. It's peak migration, so you kind of never know what's gonna show up," Vice President of the Grand Rapids Audubon Club Spencer High said. "It's amazing how many things you can see in an urban environment. And birding is one of those hobbies that you can take with you wherever you go. And you're always going to see something new, and have different unique experiences with different species."
Last year, High said the attendees ended up with 58 species observed in a single morning.
They broke that record with a total of 76 unique species spotted on Saturday.
If you missed Saturday's event, you can still visit Blandford Nature Center on your own during their normal hours.
