HUDSONVILLE, Mich. — Kevin Swift of Jenison, a die-hard Detroit Lions fan, brought a trend that started in the Detroit area right to his West Michigan front door in support of the team's win.
Kevin posted on his Facebook account that he was going to start a movement where Lions fans would purchase blue porch lights for the Detroit-based football team that recently had a victory win against the Buccaneers. The lights would be a symbol of pride to show others they’re not afraid of showcasing how loyal they are to the Lions.
The ‘Blue Light Movement’ found its way to Gwen Charles’ home in Hudsonville. Charles purchased a blue light from Meijer to put near her front door, and a blue smart bulb for a lamp in her dining room. She says her husband Chris has been a huge fan since he was very young and has passed the torch to their young son, Austin, who says he’s rooting for his favorite player of all time—Jahmyr Gibbs.
Charles says the blue lights she was inspired by her friend Kevin to purchase are more than just a light.
“People will drive by and say oh, they're Lions fans and they're rooting for their team and you know they're loyal fans,” Charles said. They're not just fair-weather fans that are hopping on the bandwagon because the Lions are finally doing well.”
Kevin's son, Jaden Swift, says he has been a fan of the Detroit Lions since he was a young child, and the blue lights he arrives home to every day remind him and his family of the Lions' ability to thrive in the winning spirit.
“It shows love and it gets me super excited every time I go home and see those lights for the next game,” Jaden said. "And hopefully it'll continue to be next games after this one this week, but, it's very cool to see that blue light and I'm just reminded of my Lions - my childhood teams are making it this year.”
Lights were purchased from Ace Hardware and Meijer store locations. The Charles and Swift families said they are looking forward to the Detroit Lions' win against San Francisco’s 49ers, and have a "dream of a lifetime" to attend a Superbowl game in the future.
