STANWOOD, Mich. — Nestle Waters North America says it will pump an additional $2 million into a fund that supports environmental conservation projects in the Muskegon River watershed.
The company established the Ice Mountain Environmental Stewardship Fund in 2002 with an initial investment of $500,000 over five years. It has contributed varying amounts since then. The next $2 million will be paid over 20 years. Nestle pumps and bottles water in western Michigan under the Ice Mountain brand.
The fund is managed by the Fremont Area Community Foundation in Newaygo County. It supports projects in a watershed stretching across nine counties from the Houghton Lake area to Muskegon.
It has awarded nearly $625,000 in grants for efforts such as erosion control, rain gardens, restoration to creeks and nature areas and site cleanups.
The next application period opens June 1.
