28th Street pedestrian dies from injuries; hit once, maybe twice by vehicles

The crash happened after 10 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, on 28th Street between Jefferson and Madison avenues.

A man died from critical injuries after police say he was hit by one, perhaps two vehicles, while crossing 28th Street.

An early Grand Rapids police investigation shows the man was crossing 28th Street between Jefferson and Madison avenues when he was hit by a westbound vehicle, according to a news release. It's believed the victim then was thrown into the roadway, where he might have been hit by a westbound SUV.

The crash happened after 10 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26.

Police say the victim did not have any identification, and they are working to determine his next of kin. They later identified him as 29-year-old Kenneth Allen Dewinter.

The driver of the initial vehicle was not hurt, the release states. Police are working to figure out who was driving the second vehicle, which is believed to be a white or light colored SUV.
