MUSKEGON, Mich. — Robert Lighton Park was full of people Tuesday night, meeting with leaders from the City of Muskegon and the Muskegon Department of Transportation to learn about and chime in on the future of one of the city's busiest streets.
"In 2026 we're going to be constructing Apple Avenue from Muskegon Avenue out to U.S. 31. Work consists of reconstruction of the pavement. We're out here today to discuss some concepts that we developed," said Jason Sundell who serves as a project and contracts engineer for MDOT.
The concepts were put together using data from a traffic study conducted by a consultant working for the city. Among other things, they looked at traffic signals, traffic counts and lane configuration.
"We don't get projects like this very often - to do more of a downtown reconstruct. This is an opportunity to look at some different aspects, as far as looking at the pedestrians, non motorized - kind of bring out some of that walkability to the community," Sundell said.
Tuesday night's meeting brought what Sundell called mixed feedback. Some people wanted Apple Avenue to be left the way it is. Others had concerns about trying to cross the street.
If you'd like to offer your feedback on the project, there will be more feedback sessions in the future. In the meantime, you can also submit feedback on the city's website, where an MDOT Conceptual Plan Review Feedback Form will be active through July 2 at noon.
