KENT COUNTY, Mich. — Update, 5:40 p.m.:

Troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Rockford Post are currently investigating a fatal crash that occurred Wednesday morning on westbound 1-96. Police say that the victim of the crash was a 33-year-old man.

Preliminary investigation indicated that a Lincoln SUV was headed westbound and failed to stop for traffic that was slowing on the freeway due to the cleanup of a semi-truck rollover that happened earlier that morning.

The SUV rear-ended a commercial box truck, which was travelling slowly with traffic.

The 33-year-old driver of the SUV was killed in the collision. His name is being withheld until family is notified.

The driver of the box truck, a 34-year-old Fenton man, was not injured.

Original story, 12 p.m.:

Authorities in Kent County have reopened a portion of I-96 after a deadly crash Wednesday morning.

According to Michigan State Police, it happened on westbound I-96, just west of Alden Nash Avenue around 10:15 a.m.

It was a two vehicle crash involving an SUV and a commercial box truck. One person died in the incident, MSP tweeted around 11 a.m.

Drivers in the area faced significant delays and backups after the the freeway was closed during the investigation and clean up of the scene.

Westbound I-96 traffic was directed to the Lowell exit at Alden Nash. MSP also closed the eastbound lanes of I-96, so traffic in the backup in the westbound lanes could be redirected.

Earlier this morning, a semi-truck rolled over in the area. It caused significant traffic and delays as well. Injuries to the semi driver were said to be minor, but there was no word on what caused that crash.
