WALKER, Mich. - Starting Friday, April 20, eastbound I-96 from Alpine to the Plainfield Avenues is closed. Those lanes will stay closed from mid-April to mid-June while engineers rework 10 bridges and reconstruct some of the road.
In anticipation, 13 On Your Side tested some of the possible detours drivers can take to get back on I-96 after exiting at Alpine.
U.S. 131 to I-196 (MDOT-recommended)
- Exit 96 E at Alpine Avenue
- South on Alpine
- Left/East on Ann Street
- Left/North on Turner Avenue
- Ramp to U.S. 131 South
- Merge onto I-196 E until it converges with 96 E
- Afternoon run time: 11 minutes, 30 seconds
Alpine-Ann-Plainfield
- Exit 96 E at Alpine Avenue
- South on Alpine
- Left/East on Ann Street
- Left/North on Plainfield Avenue
- Merge onto 96 E ramp
- Afternoon run time: 10 minutes
Alpine-Leonard
- Exit 96 E at Alpine Avenue
- South on Alpine
- Left/East on Leonard Street
- Merge onto 96 E ramp
- Afternoon run time: 15 minutes, 30 seconds
MDOT will close the westbound I-96 lanes from Plainfield Avenue to Alpine Avenue in mid-June when the eastbound construction is complete.
