MICHIGAN, USA — Drivers hitting the road this Labor Day weekend are finding some relief at the gas pump. Gas prices in West Michigan have continued to trend downward this past month.
Locations near Grand Rapids show prices around $3.30 while toward Muskegon drivers can find prices around $3.10.
De Haan said this trend is expected to continue into the fall.
"So the good news is falling gas prices aren't going to be done anytime soon," Gas Buddy analyst Patrick De Haan said. "We also switch back to cheaper winter gasoline. That's just a little over two weeks away from happening. We're going to see more prices under $3 a gallon this fall, but for now, Labor Day looking fairly good."
De Haan said this trend is also being seen nationally. The average has been down across the U.S. for about four weeks, De Haan said, and prices in West Michigan are now at their lowest since March.
"All of this happening because gasoline demand this summer has been relatively weak," he said. "We've also seen not a whole lot of refinery outages, and really no hurricanes that have impacted prices."
In Michigan, some of the highest gas prices are being reported in the Detroit area, including in Oakland, Livingston and Washtenaw counties, according to AAA.
