GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Gas prices across the nation continue to rise, including in West Michigan, as tensions mount in Europe.
A barrel of oil now costs more than $100, which is the highest its been since 2014. Now, everyone is feeling the pain at the pump. The average price for a gallon of gas is about $3.97 for regular unleaded in Michigan, which is 60 cents more than this time just last month.
Last week, we saw the largest weekly increases in average gas prices across the Midwest, which included several West Michigan cities: Muskegon, Battle Creek, and here in Grand Rapids at the rate of .25 cents, according to Gas Buddy.
Now, drivers are looking to save at every turn. AAA is telling motorists there are a few ways people can save amid the soaring gas prices.
"Shop around for gas prices," said Adrienne Woodland of AAA. "Drivers can check gas prices on our AAA mobile app or AAA.com. You also may want to consider paying cash versus credit. Some retailers charge extra per gallon for the use of a credit card. Also, [you might] want to consider enrolling in savings programs."
Woodland went on to say you should maintain your vehicle to ensure optimal fuel economy and combine your errands to limit driving time. Additionally, she said, slow down. She added fuel economy diminishes significantly at highway speeds above 50 miles an hour.
Gas prices have already topped the $4 mark across much of the Midwest, including in West Michigan. Experts say this trend will continue as tensions mount in Europe.
