AAA: Gas prices in Michigan hit 2024 high

Part of the reasoning for this increase in prices is a spike in demand amid a slight oil shortage.

MICHIGAN, USA — Michigan marked the highest gas price of 2024 so far on Friday, with the average cost for a gallon of regular unleaded gas reaching $3.81, according to AAA.

Since then, the average price has decreased to $3.78 per gallon. Despite this decrease, gas prices are still up 10 cents compared to a week ago and 12 cents higher than this time last year.

For a full 15-gallon tank of gas, Michiganders can expect to pay about $56, which is $2 less than 2023's highest price.

Part of the reasoning for this increase in prices is a spike in demand amid a slight oil shortage. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported a decrease in crude oil supply, and crude oil inventories in the U.S. are down about 5%, according to AAA.

"Michigan drivers are seeing much higher prices at the pump as the state average set a new 2024-high on Friday," said AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland. "Refinery issues in Joliet, Illinois, alongside higher gasoline demand, have led to an increase in gas prices across the upper Midwest."

In Michigan, Grand Rapids is among the cities paying the most for gas with an average of $3.88 per gallon. Jackson ($3.89) and Saginaw ($3.87) are also seeing gas prices above average.

The Michigan cities seeing the least expensive gas prices include Marquette ($3.48), Metro Detroit ($3.70) and Traverse City ($3.75).
