AAA: Michigan gas prices at their lowest since February

Officials say the dropping prices are partially due to falling demand and cheaper oil.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Gas prices in Michigan are on their way down, with the latest statewide average being the lowest since February, according to AAA.

As of Monday, the average gas price in Michigan is $3.25 per gallon of regular unleaded gas. This is down 12 cents from last week and down 37 cents from this time last month.

Drivers filling up a 15-gallon tank should expect to spend about $48 at the pump.

"Michigan motorists are seeing the lowest gas prices since February," said AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland. "Falling gasoline demand and oil costs will likely keep pump prices sliding."

In Michigan, the West Michigan area has some of the cheapest gas, including Grand Rapids with an average of about $3.06 per gallon. Benton Harbor ($3.10) and Flint ($3.18) are also among the cities with the most affordable gas.

On the other end of the spectrum, Jackson ($3.37), Ann Arbor ($3.34) and Marquette ($3.33) are seeing some of the most expensive gas prices.

Last week, some gas stations in West Michigan were reporting gas just under $3 per gallon. Patrick De Haan, a gas analyst with GasBuddy, said this downward trend is expected to continue into the fall and winter months.

"All of this happening because gasoline demand this summer has been relatively weak," he said. "We've also seen not a whole lot of refinery outages, and really no hurricanes that have impacted prices."

AAA is encouraging Michiganders to shop around for their gas to find the best prices and save some money at the pump.
