AAA: Gas prices drop ahead of busy Thanksgiving travel week

The drop in gas prices is due to both declining oil prices and lower gas demand, AAA says.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — As over a million Michiganders get ready to hit the road for Thanksgiving this week, gas prices are continuing to drop, now sitting at an average of $3.27 per gallon of regular unleaded gas.

This is a 10-cent drop from last week, and 57 cents less than this time last year, according to AAA. Michiganders should expect to pay about $49 for a full 15-gallon tank of gas.

The drop in gas prices is due to both declining oil prices and lower gas demand, AAA says.

"Michigan motorists are seeing lower pump prices ahead of Thanksgiving," said AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland. "If gas demand and the cost of oil remain low, drivers could see gas prices continue to fall heading into the holiday."

Grand Rapids is seeing some of the lowest gas prices in the state, recording an average of $3.19 per gallon. Other Michigan cities seeing lower gas prices include Benton Harbor ($3.21) and Flint ($3.24). Cities seeing the highest prices are Marquette ($3.39), Jackson ($3.36) and Ann Arbor ($3.34).

Wednesday is anticipated to be the busiest travel day this week, although AAA is encouraging travelers to expect traffic and delays throughout the week. For more Thanksgiving travel tips, click here.
