M-DOT describes plans to repair busy section of Interstate 196

The Michigan Department of Transportation (M-DOT) is budgeting $7.8 million to repair 14 bridges and 2 1/2 miles of pavement between Market Avenue and U.S. 131.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — This year's construction season is still not finished, but the Michigan Department of Transportation (M-DOT) is already preparing the public for 2020 improvement plans and potential inconveniences.

Wednesday M-DOT engineers hosted an open house to explain plans to repair bridges and resurface Interstate 196 between Market Avenue and U.S. 131.

14 bridges will get attention and a high friction surface will be applied to all 2½ miles of pavement. It is a particularly busy section of the highway and there will be closed lanes, detours and delays during the work.

“There are going to be some weekend closures,” said Transportation Service Center Manager Art Green. “Some during the week closures and lane closures on I-196 throughout the summer. The good news is we are going to bring these freeways up to speed. Things we have been trying to get to for a long time. They are very needed projects.”

Engineers say the project will last most of the 2020 construction season, staring in May and, if all goes as planned, it will be finished in October.
