MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. — An eight-mile road that doesn't allow cars and has no exact beginning or end now has a speed limit.
Mackinac Island's M-185 is an official state highway that rings the shoreline of the popular Michigan vacation spot. And that state highway now has a speed limit—for bikes.
On July 6, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation that enacted a speed limit of 10 to 15 mph on the island's main road.
The new legislation, Senate Bill 682 introduced by Republican State Senator John Damoose, sets a speed limit of 15 mph for bicycles and e-bikes on M-185 and a speed limit of 10 mph when on M-185 within the business district of the island.
While e-bikes are generally not allowed on the island, exceptions will be made for visitors with a "qualifying mobile disability," the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau says. These visitors are allowed to operate Class 1 electric bicycles on the island. Class 2 and 3 electric bicycles are not permitted on the island.
M-185 is the only state highway in the country that does not allow cars, the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau claims. The highway does allow bicycles, e-bikes, horses and carriages.
