GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A construction project originally scheduled to wrap up at the end of this month has been pushed to September.
MDOT announced Thursday that eastbound I-196 will remain closed over the Grand River on the east side of US-131 through September 25.
MDOT is working on several bridge projects at the I-196 and US-131 interchange including, replacing the bridge deck over the Grand River. The improvements will also include rebuilt and widened lanes, with additional lanes in each direction between Fuller and Maryland Avenues.
A detour is already in place on north US-131 to eastbound I-96. Two lanes of westbound I-196 will remain open into downtown Grand Rapids, and one lane of eastbound I-196 will remain open beginning at the Ionia Avenue on ramp near Michigan Street.
Lane closures and traffic shifts will be in effect throughout the season and Plymouth Avenue will remain closed under I-196 through November.
