GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM)-- Michigan State Police are cracking down on drivers who don't buckle up this week as part of their "Click It or Ticket" seat belt safety campaign. More than 140 police agencies in 26 counties throughout the state are participating. The campaign runs through November 9.

The campaign and enforcement zones are paid for with federal traffic safety funds coordinated by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. Click It or Ticket is part of Michigan's Strategic Highway Safety Plan signed by Governor Rick Snyder in 2013.

The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning held a press conference to kick off the campaign Monday morning at the Forest of Fear in Caledonia. This year's campaign is Halloween themed; reminding motorists a seat belt is also an important life-saving item that should be part of their zombie survival kit.

Police say 93 percent of people in Michigan wear their seat belts. But nearly half of the deadly accidents they deal with involve someone not wearing a seat belt.

Michigan law requires all drivers and those in the front seat to be buckled up. It also includes passengers 15 years or younger. Kids must be in a car or booster seat until they are 8 years old, or 4 feet 9 inches tall.
