WALKER, Mich. — The City of Walker opened a new roundabout in a popular shopping center on Thursday, according to a spokesperson for the city.

The single-lane roundabout is at Center Drive and Weatherford Drive in the Greenridge Shopping Center off Alpine Avenue.

Work on the nearly $1 million project began on June 4.

The city spokesperson said the purpose of the roundabout was to eliminate the aging traffic signal, save electricity and improve the safety and efficiency of the intersection.

Some of the money for the roundabout came from a carbon-reduction grant.

They said this is also an aesthetic facelift for the area, as the project brought in colored concrete, a ledge stone wall and landscaping.

Businesses in the shopping center have supported the roundabout.
