New updates on Muskegon Heights road project

New improvements to Muskegon Heights roads have been a growing concern for residents as the plan for the project was discussed at Wednesday's meeting.

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. — There are new improvements coming to a busy area of Muskegon Heights that have been talked about for years. Millions of dollars are expected to be invested on roads and downtown businesses as part of the Broadway Street Project.

While the traffic is flowing, Muskegon Heights residents say many parts of the heights have been left behind.

"What we've heard is people really want the roads done, they want them fixed, and I know they also want to see the downtown area revitalized," said president of Metro Consulting Associates, Damon Garrett.

On Wednesday, Muskegon Heights City leaders in partnership with Metro Consulting Associates, hosted a Broadway Street Project meeting to discuss updates and hear from the community.

An estimated 10-12 million dollars from the state legislature and the city are expected to be invested in one of the Height's most heavily traveled roads, Broadway Avenue.

People have been waiting a long time for this. The project has been long awaited by residents in the city.

"It's been talked about for several years. The it's a three-phase project. It spans from Getty to Glen, Glade, I'm sorry, Getty to glade. And tonight, since the port, the eastern portion is going to be under construction. This summer, it's time to start the public engagement process," said Garrett.

Wednesday's meeting discussed the timeline of the project, impact on local businesses and what parking would look like once the project begins.

"The thought was is that repaving the road, upgrading utilities would really enhance the central area and really give the business district really the kick that they need to kind of come back. So it's a it's a real important project," said Garrett.

The head of the consulting firm said the city is about a year away from major construction. He said the goal for the project is to be done by the end of 2025.
