Woman dead after crash on East Beltline Avenue in Grand Rapids

GRPD says the 32-year-old woman was the driver of one of the vehicles involved.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids police have confirmed overnight a 32-year-old woman has died as a result of the serious crash Monday night on East Beltline Avenue near Burton Street.

Around 8:10 p.m. Grand Rapids first responders received a call reporting a crash on East Beltline Avenue at the intersection of Burton and Beltline.

The Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) said that two vehicles were involved in the crash and that a vehicle heading southbound struck another vehicle. Police said they believe alcohol is a factor in the crash.

GRPD described the crash as serious and said at least four people were transported for medical care, two of them originally being in critical condition.

GRPD provided 13 ON YOUR SIDE with an update early Tuesday morning, confirming one of those patients has died from her injuries. It's not clear yet which vehicle she was driving, who was at fault, or which driver is suspected to have been under the influence.

About an hour after the crash occurred, around 9 p.m., MDOT announced that both northbound and southbound lanes of East Beltline Avenue would be closed between Burton Street and Lake Drive.

Just before 10 p.m. MDOT shared an update that the northbound lanes had reopened. Southbound lanes reopened around 11:30 p.m.

GRPD is continuing to investigate the crash, anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Traffic Unit at (616) 456-4513 or Silent Observer at (616) 774-2345 or www.silentobserver.org.
