OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. — Monday just before 9 p.m. a crash involving a semi-truck was reported near Port Sheldon Street in Olive Township.
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office responded and found a semi-truck had been traveling southbound on US-31 when it was unable to stop for the red light at Port Sheldon Street due to weather conditions causing limited visibility.
The semi-truck hit a vehicle that was traveling eastbound through the intersection on Port Sheldon. The collision sent the semi-truck into the median and into northbound traffic on US-31. The semi-truck also collided head-on with a northbound vehicle before overturning on the east shoulder of US-31 northbound.
While on scene investigating the crash a deputy with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office was struck by a vehicle heading north on US-31. The vehicle was being driven by a 42-year-old man from Grand Haven. The man was unable to stop due to the icy roads.
The sheriff's office reported the deputy was injured and receiving treatment at a nearby hospital. They did not share the extent of his injuries but said he was wearing a traffic vest to enhance visibility.
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said all people involved in the initial crash only reported minor injuries. Both northbound and southbound lanes were closed while the scene was cleared.
The sheriff's office is continuing to investigate.
