GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Gerald R. Ford International Airport is set to get a new air traffic control tower.
Monday afternoon the airport unveiled its plans for the new tower, which they say will allow the airport to continue to grow.
Its current tower sits on top of the terminal. The airport's CEO, Tory Richardson, said this inhibits their ability to grow because of line-of-sight issues.
Monday's announcement now opens up the ability for the airport to start fundraising for the new tower they said has been in the planning stages for decades.
"We got letters dating back to the early 90s. And like, as you know, several steps have had to take place over the years to make sure that we are getting the proper steps completed to move to the next phase," said Richardson.
Congresswoman Hilary Scholten estimated the project will cost at least $60 million. The State has already come up with a portion of that cost, the rest will be designated by Congress through the FAA.
