GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — Pack your patience and snow gear because we have a messy morning commute.
WHAT
Heavy, wet snowfall will work across West Michigan this morning in a short period. There will be some mixing to rainfall closer to I-94, lowering the impacts for some of our southern counties. Snowfall rates could exceed an inch per hour, causing conditions to worsen quickly. Because of this, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for all the counties highlighted in purple.
TIMING
This system is racing across the state. Snowfall began around 5 a.m. but will be wrapping up by noon today. We could even see some sunshine throughout the back half of the day. The snow will be most intense from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. If you can stay off the roads during that timeframe you'll avoid a majority of the impacts.
IMPACTS
Impacts will be short-lived but periods of low visibility, snow-coated roads, and shovelable snowfall should be expected this morning. Otherwise, the winds will crank up this afternoon but do not appear to be strong enough to create power outages.
TOTALS
Along and north of I-96 should expect a widespread 2"+ of snowfall, but where we see banding, which is likely setting up along the I-96 corridor, will near 4 to 5" of snow. The closer you get to I-94 the lower the snowfall totals get as more rainfall is mixing in.
