GRAND RAPIDS CHARTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Cooler temperatures in the 10-day forecast has us thinking fall! But, those cooler than average temperatures are expected to be short lived as warmer than average conditions build into your 90-day temperature outlook. That means your fall forecast will be a warm one.
The warmest places on the map will be in southwest portions of the United States and along the East Coast. As for West Michigan, temperatures are expected to be slightly above average.
This means we could see more temperatures in the mid to upper 70s through September. Trending cooler into the November with the average temperatures in the 40's.
As for precipitation, the southwest portions of the United will be below average. Here in West Michigan about average precipitation is expected for the season.
The combination of above average temperatures and average precipitation could lead to a later onset of peak fall foliage. The change of fall leaves comes from the change in daylight hours and the change in temperatures. If temperatures stay warmer longer, we can expect leaves to take longer to fully change colors.
With all this being said, the first freeze in West Michigan is expected between Oct. 1-10.
