GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — Arctic air does not always stay in the arctic and starting this afternoon we will see its impacts.
The coldest air since 2019 is packing a punch bringing high temperatures down into the teens! This comes as the polar vortex undergoes a change in its pattern, allowing areas of arctic air to break off and travel down into the United States.
Low temperatures are also expected to drop into the single digits, making your morning drives and evening walks bitter cold.
This cold air is not the only thing impacting the area. We will also see several days of gusty winds and rounds of accumulating snowfall. This weekend we will see westerly winds sustained at 15 to 20 mph, gusting up to 30 mph. Dropping our wind chill values below zero at times. With the chance for clearing Sunday night into Monday, we could see inland temperatures drop as low as -5 to -10° F.
Fridge air like this does pose the threat of frostbite.
Lake effect snow will bring an additional 2+ inches of snowfall today. Then our next wave of snow arrives Saturday afternoon bringing another couple of inches to the area. Lake effect snow is expected to remain in the forecast through much of next week.
