MICHIGAN, USA — The sunny, comfortable weather heading into this weekend may have many considering a beach day, but there are a few concerns to consider before heading out to the lakeshore.

A Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) will be in effect starting late tonight and lasting through Saturday evening. This statement includes the following counties: Oceana, Muskegon, Ottawa, Allegan, and Van Buren.

LAKE MICHIGAN FORECAST

Dangerous swimming conditions with high waves and strong currents are expected to develop all along West Michigan beaches. Northwest winds of 10-20 mph with gusts exceeding 25 mph at times with result in waves between 3-6 feet, building to 4-7 feet by Saturday.

With northwesterly winds, the northern sides of piers and other structures will be especially dangerous. The danger exists above water as well on the piers themselves where high waves are expected to wash over piers frequently.

Avoiding getting in the water when swimming conditions are dangerous is the best way to stay safe but if you do get caught in a rip current, don’t panic – instead, flip onto your back and swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current.

Even strong swimmers can be easily swept out to deeper waters by rip currents, and with high wave action added to the mix, these situations can turn deadly. Checking swimming conditions before heading out to the beach and paying attention to the beach flag color are great ways to stay informed and safe.
