'Boats were thrown and a barn flipped into a swamp': Storm causes damage in Grant

The damage happened near the Safeway Automotive Group.

GRANT, Mich. — A severe thunderstorm warning was issued in multiple Michigan counties and cities Thursday evening.

The storm that went through Grant, in Newaygo County, left "brush, downed trees, thrown boats, and a barn flipped into a swamp," said a witness of the storm Ashley Nichole Lovett.

Most of the damage happened near the Safeway Automotive Group, Lovett said.

Many viewers sent in videos of rotating clouds, otherwise known as funnel clouds. A funnel cloud is a cloud that is extended from the parent cloud but does not touch the ground.

Large hail also fell across many parts of West Michigan, including golf ball size hail in Fremont.

The storms also caused power outages affecting residents and businesses across west Michigan.
