KENT COUNTY, Mich. — Experts say with the storm on the way, now is the time to prepare.
The third in a series of winter storms will feature near-blizzard conditions Friday into early Saturday.
A major winter storm for West Michigan is expected to begin around sunrise Friday, and last through early Saturday. Several inches of heavy, wet snow is expected by early evening, followed by strong winds gusting to 40+ mph with considerable blowing snow Friday evening.
Experts say a phone charger, blankets and first aid supplies are all important. It never hurts to plan for an extended stay in the car if you get stuck somewhere.
With the amount of snow expected, if your car is stuck, it could become buried and tough to spot. In that situation, a powerful flashlight, roadside flares or even a whistle can be life-saving.
Here are some items to keep in your vehicle during your travels:
- Cell phone charger
- First aid kit
- Jumper cables
- Spare tire
- Flares
- Full tank of gas
- Sand or kitty litter
- Tow rope
- Blankets
- Snow shovel and brush
- Flashlight

- Charge your electronic devices in case of power outages.
- If you need to travel, limit time spent on roadways; choose another time to go shopping.
- Have an alternative source of heat, if possible.
