CONFIRMED: Two tornadoes touched down on August 28

The National Weather Service confirmed two tornadoes in Lake County from the night of August 28.

BALDWIN, Mich. -- One of the hardest hit areas from Tuesday evening's storms was the Baldwin community, where tree damage was extensive. On Friday, the National Weather Service confirmed two tornado touch-downs, one in the Baldwin community.

The first tornado touched down in the village of Baldwin at 7:27 p.m. on August 28. Estimated max winds of 85 mph register this tornado as an EF-0.

Three minutes later, a second tornado touched down to the southeast of the first. This tornado was even stronger than the first, with winds up to 100 mph, and classified as an EF-1. Both tornadoes had a path length of one mile and a width of 500 yards.

While these weak tornadoes did result in plenty of damage, the most extensive damage from the storms was from straight-line winds. Mason and Oceana counties dealt with downed trees, capsized boats and extensive power outages. The area of damage extended inland to Big Rapids. Straight-line winds peaked between 70 to 90 mph.

Four other tornadoes were confirmed earlier in the week in northern lower Michigan. The line of severe storms on August 28 resulted in a total of six tornadoes in Michigan, and 16 in Wisconsin.
