“It just got really loud really fast.”
Michael Gutierrez and his family were watching the storm one moment, and in the middle of it the next.
“We didn’t even make it from the basement to the living room before it was over with.”
Thankfully nobody was hurt, but they still had some scary moments.
“My sister was caught in her room from the wind," Gutierrez said. "She couldn’t get her door open.”
The family boat – flipped and totaled by the wind. The Gutierrez' rent their home, and had to call the owner with more hard news for the centennial farmhouse.
“The barns are all gone, that’s the sad part. Hundred and thirty five years, build in 1883.”
Another home on the nearby corner of Jacob Lake and Bippley roads in Ionia County took heavily structural damage. Thankfully the family was not home at the time. The family says they did not hear a tornado siren go off. At the end of the day, they say they’re focusing on what’s most important.
“Hard to replace memories," Gutierrez says, "but everyone is safe."
