MICHIGAN, USA — Fall is in full swing, and so are the typical changes in weather across West Michigan. Per usual at this point of October, temperatures – both daytime highs and nighttime lows – are quickly becoming colder.

A Freeze Warning will be in effect from midnight until 9 a.m. on Tuesday as temperatures near or fall below 32°. The combination of a mostly clear sky, plus a light northerly wind will aid in the near to sub-freezing temperatures for a few hours. It’s been over 170 days – April 25 – since the last sub-freezing low temperature across West Michigan.

This aligns with the typical timing for the first freeze of the fall, which on average occurs on October 13 in Muskegon, and October 14 in Grand Rapids. Kalamazoo and Holland average their first freeze on October 16.

“Additional nights of frost and/or freezing temperatures are likely through most of this week, but tonight's Freeze warning will be the final frost/freeze related headline issuance for the fall as the growing season draws to a close,” said the National Weather Service office of Grand Rapids.

Counties near and north of US-10 are not under any frost/freeze headlines tonight as the growing season is already deemed over because of prior bouts of widespread frost.

As a rule of thumb with colder nights ahead, it’s a good idea to take precautions for any plants or vegetation you may have. Bring potted plants into the garage or shed to protect them from freezing temperatures. Cover outdoor plants with a light sheet or blanket.

West Michigan will remain chilly through Wednesday before temperatures rebound above average for this time of year by the end of the week and into the weekend. Long-term model guidance hints at several days of high temperatures soaring well into the 60s, and nighttime lows by the weekend should settle in the 40s.
