Friday's snowfall totals for West Michigan after early spring snowfall

Chief Meteorologist George Lessens tallies up the totals from Friday's early-spring snowstorm.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. —

TIMELINE

Snow began across West Michigan early Friday morning, starting at 3:44 am at the Muskegon County Airport, reaching the G.R. Ford Airport by 4:05 am. Visibilities dropped to as low as 1/8th mile in Muskegon and to 1/4 mile in Grand Rapids.

Snow accumulated quickly as the ground temperature was around 33° at 7 am. Air temperatures remained below freezing inland all day allowing the snow to pile up.

Travel was impacted throughout the day with road conditions varying from snow-covered and slippery to wet. Some schools closed for the day.

  • GR Ford Arpt - 6.5"

  • WZZM 13 - 5.5”
  • Rockford - 5.5”
  • Castle Park - 5.3”
  • Grand Ledge - 5.0”
  • Hudsonville - 4.0”
  • Caledonia - 4.0”
  • Sand Lake - 4.0”
  • Holt - 4.0”
  • Hastings - 4.0”
  • Saint Johns - 3.5”
  • Belmont - 3.3”

RECORD SNOWFALL for MARCH 22

The 6.5" of snow at the GR Ford Airport set a daily record for March 22.  The previous record was 6.3" in 1965.

So far this season Grand Rapids has received 46.5", 27.9'' below average.  This compares to 109.2'' at this time last year.
