GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Recently, I wrote an article on June 19 titled "Where are all the thunderstorms in West Michigan this year?" It seems the weather then thundered to life, because since then, we have totaled 14 thunderstorm days, with 12 in July alone.
July Thunderstorms
Those 12 thunderstorm days in July 2023 tied the for the most in July with 1938 and 1912.
Typical, July is the month with the most thunderstorms on average, with about six.
Which Day of the Year Has the Most Storms?
Since 1904, the days of the year with most thunderstorms are:
- 31 days - July 23
- 30 days - June 18, 30
- 30 days - July 21
- 30 days - August 3
Statistically speaking, you may want to avoid planning any extended outdoor activities on these days.
Why Have There Been More Storms?
There are three basic ingredients needed for thunderstorm development: moisture, an unstable atmosphere and some way to start the atmosphere moving. All three of these have been in abundant supply recently.
