GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Large waves are taking over the Lake Michigan shoreline once again Tuesday. This has caused beach hazard statements to be issued for the following counties: Allegan, Van Buren and Ottawa.

Northernly flow is expected to ramp up to 15 to 25 mph this afternoon. These gusty winds will cause waves to crash in at three to five feet, resulting in increasingly dangerous swimming conditions as we head into the early evening hours.

The highest risk locations will be south of Grand Haven through St. Joseph.

Most drownings within the Great Lakes occur when waves are 3 to 6 feet tall. To help prevent drownings here are some safety tips:

If you ever find yourself being swept away from the shoreline quickly, you are most likely in a rip current. Make sure to follow the procedure of "flip, float, and follow." It is important to keep in mind that rip currents will not pull you under if you stay relaxed. So be sure to keep these tips in mind whenever diving into the water.

Best practices are to stay out of the waters completely Tuesday afternoon. Large waves have been seen to crash over piers, making it increasingly important to steer clear of them as well.

Stay safe and stay alert!
