When severe weather strikes, do you and your family have a plan to keep safe?
But even before acting, how do you receive warning?
Kent County officials began testing the region's tornado sirens at noon Friday, April 1. The tests, conducted the first Friday of the month through October, coincide about a week before the start of Michigan's severe weather awareness week.
Sirens are activated in the event of damaging winds or tornadoes. If you do not hear them, you're asked to contact your local township or city office.
A special survey page has been set up online to share your thoughts on the county's sirens.

While sirens easily can be heard outside and occasionally indoors, they might not be are able to wake you up out of a slumber.
A NOAA Weather Radio can provide that jolt to action for a warned area, and many smartphone apps -- including highly-rated apps from the American Red Cross -- can sound a loud alarm. Before, during and after a storm, the WZZM app also will provide the latest weather information from its team of meteorologists.

“This is a great time to review your severe weather plan, refresh your supplies and make sure you are prepared,” said Jack Stewart, the Kent County emergency management coordinator in a news release.
“Check your flashlight and stock up on fresh batteries. Homes should have enough fresh drinking water for three days, canned food items and a can opener, an all-weather radio and a first aid kit.”
