GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — It's official — Muskegon will be recording their wettest year ever.
Earlier this month, Grand Rapids also broke the standing record of the wettest year.
In the final days of the year, Muskegon shattered the standing record of 45.98 inches of precipitation set back in 2008. Hours of steady rain on Sunday brought Muskegon's total above 46 inches.
Annual precipitation is a combination of rainfall and melted snowfall.
Only one month of the year concluded with below-average precipitation for Muskegon. The month of August totaled 2.16 inches of rain, over an inch less than average.
Most months of the year measured above-average precipitation. In October, nearly 8 inches of precipitation was recorded — over twice as much of the monthly average.
West Michigan has been in a dry stretch for the last 10 days, but that has come to an end. With more rain and snow falling before the end of 2019, both Grand Rapids and Muskegon will continue to see the precipitation total rise.
Muskegon has already estimated over an inch of rain Sunday morning with likely more than an inch still to come.
The unprecedented amount of water will only exacerbate the Great Lakes water levels and beach erosion concerns for 2020.
