Muskegon County roads expected to be cleared by Wednesday night

Trees and downed power lines have been major issues for both city and county workers.

MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. — Roads in Muskegon County are much safer than they were on Tuesday night, but some debris is still in need of cleanup around the area.

Throughout Muskegon County, crews are still working to clean up those downed power lines, downed trees and anything else that could cause roadways to be unsafe.

Muskegon officials say the difficulty clearing this snow was largely because of its type.

"It is very wet snow," says Muskegon public works director Dan VanderHeide. "So it's heavy and difficult to move in some cases. This morning, it was a little icy, as well, and some of that snow was a little crusty."

13 ON YOUR SIDE also spoke with a couple tree removal services on Wednesday, who say they've been dealing with large amounts of calls. VanderHeide says trees have been an issue for the city as well.

"We're working pretty much around the clock to address tree issues, but they remain, in some cases, on the roads," he says. "Some of them are intertwined with power lines and things like that."

Despite those challenges, VanderHeide believes the city's roads should all be cleared soon.

"There may be an isolated street that we're not able to get to because a large tree is still down or a power line is still in the way or Consumers perhaps is working to repair something in the area," says VanderHeide. "But if we can access that side street, we expect it to be complete by the end of the day."
