National Weather Service confirms EF-0 Tornado touched down in Allegan County

Following a damage survey of Wednesday's storms, the National Weather Service has found evidence of a brief weak EF-0 tornado touching down in the Dorr area.

ALLEGAN COUNTY, Mich. — Surveyors from the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids confirmed a weak tornado briefly touched down in the Dorr area during the second day of severe storms this week. 

Crews rated the tornado an EF-0, which is the weakest on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. 

The tornado moved through northern portions of Allegan County, touching down around 9:01 pm. It was on the ground for about 3 miles, with a max wind speed of 75 MPH and maximum path width of about 100 yards. The tornado touched down 2 miles east of Burnips, or 4.5 miles west of Dorr, and lifted at 9:05 pm just east of 21st Street and 1.5 miles west of Dorr.

The tornado destroyed an outbuilding near 26th Street and a large agricultural irrigation structure east of 26th street was knocked over. Tree and roof damage was noted along the path through 24th, 23rd, 22nd, and on to 21st Streets.

At the time of the tornado, severe storms were ongoing across the area, with Severe Thunderstorm Warnings in place at the time.

Storms across west Michigan caused numerous reports of damage, flooding and widespread power outages this week. 

Power crews are still working to restore power for thousands of homes and businesses.  

This is Michigan's 7th reported tornado in 2021.
