GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — October typically features a rollercoaster ride of conditions, and this year is starting off no different. In the past, we have seen everything from the upper 80s to temperatures in the teens. The first week of October 2023 features nearly record-breaking afternoon highs to start the week and highs in the 50s by the weekend.
Your Monday will be sunny and slightly humid, with a forecast high of 83° and clear conditions continuing into the overnight hours. This gives us a forecast low of 60°.
Tuesday looks very similar with sunshine and highs in the low to mid 80s. Don't get too comfortable, because Wednesday will feature some changes! Skies will be partly cloudy, still humid, breezy and warm. A cold front moves through in the afternoon hours bringing showers and even a fall thunderstorm by Wednesday evening.
The showers and cloud coverage linger into Thursday and our temperatures are back down to seasonable averages. Thursday will be perfect sweater weather with a high of 67°.
The weekend will bring a shift in our upper-level pattern. The current flow we are under reflects at the surface as warmer-than-average conditions and dry skies.
But, by the weekend, a large cool pocket of air will sink into place. This not only will bring us cooler-than-average temperatures but will also fire up the lake effect machine! The good news is that this will be lake-effect rain, not snow. Therefore, rainfall will not be widespread, but it does bring us chances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
While we need rain, totals aren't looking all that impressive. Our best chance for widespread soaking rain is Wednesday night into Thursday. This should bring us close to 0.5 inches of precipitation. Those who end up seeing lake-enhanced rainfall will have slightly higher totals by the end of the weekend.
Overall, whether you are hanging on to every last little bit of summer or are ready for fall, there is a little something for everyone in this week's 10-day outlook.
