Northern lights, Perseid meteor shower puts on a show overnight

Those who stayed up overnight were treated to the peak of the Perseid meteor shower and a visit from the Aurora Borealis.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Clear skies, peak Perseid meteor shower and active space weather offered a beautiful show overnight in West Michigan.

Shooting stars and the Aurora Borealis danced across the night sky, captured brilliantly through long-exposure photos.

The Perseids' peak typically begins mid-July and lasts through the end of August. This year's peak was Saturday night and into dawn on Aug. 12.

At the Perseids' peak, NASA said there could be up to 100 meteors an hour in the night sky.

The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center said there were strong geomagnetic conditions thanks to a response to a coronal mass ejection passing by Earth. You can check out tonight's Aurora Forecast here.

If you missed the meteor shower Sunday night, you could still see some shooting stars but they won't be at their peak.

Your best bet for seeing meteors or the northern lights is to find a dark sky with as little light pollution as possible.
