Plow crews battle bitter cold, winds and snowfall as they work to clean roads

While most of the major snowfall has already moved through, road commissions are reminding drivers to drive carefully as crews clean up the aftermath.

WHITE CLOUD, Mich. — Plow crews around West Michigan are making progress on your roads as they continue cleaning up the aftermath of last week's heavy snowfall, amid freezing temperatures and more lake effect snow hitting the ground.

In Kent County, the road commission making progress onto more residential streets today, after managing to keep main roads fairly clear through yesterday.

"[Monday's] a holiday, but you still can have increased traffic," the Kent County Road Commission's managing director, Jerry Byrne, said on Sunday. "So, we've got to spend our energy like we do all the time on those main roads. But, so, tomorrow we're going to get through all those secondary neighborhood streets at least once so people can get through."

In Ottawa County it's a similar picture - even as dropping temperatures are creating more dense snow and slick conditions on the roads.

"Today, [crews have] been able to make some progress, get into those subdivision areas, you know," said Ottawa County Road Commission Communications Administrator Alex Doty. "They've been able to make a dent over the weekend as well. But today, they're really concentrating on getting into those areas and making sure that we get as much cleaned out as we can."

And in Newaygo County, with their almost two dozen trucks out on the road, the county's road commission has been able to go through the entire county network, they said - despite also having a number of trees falling on the road in their area due to heavy snow.

"Some of those rural areas, we've had to actually use our front plows to push back some of the snow drifts that keep blowing in," said Newaygo County Road Commission Superintendent of Operations Mike Brege. "But, we are getting through a lot of those north-south roads where they are drifting over and we've had to go over them a few times. But, we do have them open up now."

When it comes to what drivers can do, all three said the same thing: slow down.
